Hike around Aso rock – 13 August 2006

Yes the guide showed up - it had been communicated to him that we were to meet at 2.  We got hassled by some people who said they were military but refused to identify themselves.  Long argument between the guide and the people.  They finally backed off only to return awhile later with someone else who seemed to be more authoritative.  At that point we told them we had no interest in continuing if there were going to be problem.  They finally let us go once they had been assured that we were going around the rock, not climbing it.  After all that, the walk was lovely although we didn't get much time to stop and look around.  But, it was worth it.

Rating (easy, moderate, difficult, impossible):

Moderate, may be difficult at times

Security:

There may be problems with various military not wanting you to go up the rock.  Don’t go up the rock.  If you can, get a permit to go around the rock.

Dear All,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. My name is Daniel Rogger, and I have
written in the past about the walk around Aso Rock.

I know that a number of people have being doing this walk independently.
Unfortunately, in the last two weeks, a dispute has arisen with the local
barracks over which paths can be used to complete the walk.

I strongly suggest that you do not do the Aso Rock walk until this dispute
has been cleared up. The approval obtained from the Minister of FCT has to
be better communicated to the barracks. I shall get back to the list when
that is so. If you know of anyone who is thinking about attempting the walk
and is not on the abuja expats list, please do let them know.

With best wishes,

Dan Rogger

Gear:

Good hiking shoes, at least knee-high socks – long pants better.  Just a word of warning that mornings tend to be less rainy than afternoons but on Sundays the guide goes to church so we'll have to take that chance.

Costs:

I'm trying to get a hold of the guide person Mr. Baturi - he charges N250 per person.

Contact:

Mr. Baturi and his cell is 0802 690 3297.  Just a warning that his cell is usually not on.  Best to text him I think.

Timing:

 Total time 3 – 3˝ hours

Directions:

Meet at National Children’s Park and Zoo in the parking lot.
