A Day with Culture – Saturday 14 June 2008

This page updated:  25-Jun-08

The Nigerian Field Society hosted, for those interested in Nigerian art and culture, a batik exhibition of the Jos-based artist Temitope Adebiyi.

Tope presented a number of small and a few large pieces of batik, as well as wood carvings, soapstone, and brass figurines. He was also happy to talk about his artwork: motifs, themes, styles, techniques, materials, and traditions behind them.  The exhibition was a success, both from the point of view of the NFS as we present not only the nature of Nigeria and West Africa through our various trips, but also the culture.  And it was a success for Tope, too, who sold a number both of his own works – the batiks – and of the pieces he has collected in his gallery.

Tope is a contemporary artist who relates African Culture and traditions, including Yoruba folklore, in his work.  He was trained as an Art Educator before allying himself with Suzanne Wenger and Sangodare Ajala in Osogbo.  He works mostly in batiks / tie & dye, and also in pen and ink on water colours and acrylics, and in wood, soapstone, and brass, too.  He exhibits both locally and abroad, and has had a number of solo exhibitions with the different Alliances française in Nigeria.

The NFS thanks the French Cultural Centre - Abuja for generous allowing us the us of its facilities, and the French Cultural Center - Jos for supporting this exhibition.
