Full moon walk – 3 March 2007
Updated 14
March 2008
It was a wonderful evening – so well
organized by
We met at a church in the area near the
Julius Berger Life Camp at 6.45pm on Saturday 3 March. We left our saloon cars (sedans) in the lot
with a guard, and carpooled in high-clearance vehicles to an already lit
area. Dusk was around 7 to 7.15pm and
the moon rose soon after.
Two routes were laid; a walkers' route
and a "slow" runners'. The
courses were fairly easy and 4kms and 7 kms respectively, and various people
showed up – from kids to those of us who are kids only still in our minds.
Once the moon rose, we walked along dirt
roads and across hills with our torches (flashlights) in hand. A gentle warm breeze helped us along, and the
slight haze of the end of the kharmattan turned the rolling landscape a
slightly golden dream. Eventually, there
was enough light from the bright full moon that many people put out (offed)
their lights. It was a warm and pleasant
evening and the pace was good. We were
accompanied by armed guards, but never felt in any way unsafe. We had a couple of stream crossings – one
with frogs, and there was one stop for refreshments.
After our very pleasant walk, we arrived
back and there was a BBQ laid out for us
in the bush. We chatted and talked in
the pleasant warmth, and at about 11pm we started to watch the total lunar
eclipse.
What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday
evening!
