Hike the Valley between Mpape and Aso Rock – Sunday, 26 August 2007

After the breakdown in negotiations with the chief of the village near Ushafa to which the cave belongs (Ushafa Cave Trip), Roland saved the day by leading us on a great hike in the very tropical valley between the town of Mpape and Aso Rock.  The valley is occupied by settled-down Fulani, and is partially farmed.  We drove the road past Mpape as far as it would take us, behind Aso Rock, then we parked and walked for a little over one hour in each direction.  To the right of us were Aso and the other rocks which form a small chain, and to the left of us were streams, small waterfalls, rock outcroppings, and lots of heavy vegetation.  We passed some great vistas of Abuja and other towns.  At the end, we climbed a granite hill and had our rest and our lunch.

Even the slight rain which started just as we were heading back did not dampen our spirits.  It was a beautiful hike, we met many friendly people along the way, and got to know a very natural side of Abuja.
