Walk
around Usuma lake – Sunday, 17 June 2007
We
joined for a leisurely walk partially around Usuma lake starting as Usuma
dam. We met around 8:30 at our compound,
and, after giving very exacting directions to our convoy drivers, we set out
for the ½-hour drive to Usuma dam.
Unfortunately, due to a great deal of gabbing, I missed the turn – only
to figure it out once we started approaching Zuma rock, so it took a bit longer
than expected to get there!
When we arrived, we took
a walk around the rock and over the dam, and then along the edge of the lake on
the gravel road. The fishermen were
fishing in their canoes and carrying their catch back to the village.

We walked and took pictures until we got to a
nice rock. Some people chose to climb
the rock, while others chose to return slowly to a nice rock at the edge of the
lake at which we waited for the others to have a picnic lunch.

Then we walked back to our cars, and drove back.

Piles of wood for
sale.
Thanks to Diane for all the
wonderful pictures!
Rating:
Easy.
Security:
Parking is on the dam, where
often other vehicles are parked.
Although I have not had this experience, I have been told that once some
vehicles were broken into. If you have a
driver you can leave with the cars, it would be of help.
Gear:
Loose clothing adaptable for
air-conditioned cars, hot trails, and possible rain and mud. Sun hat and sunscreen are advisable as are 2
large bottles of water per person – one in the car for later and one to take
with you, and snacks or picnic lunch – keep it light as you’ll have to pack it
in.
Costs:
Fuel.
Timing:
30 minutes each way to the
dam. We’ll walk as long and as far as we
wish to.

past British Circle to end.
