Lagbaja: An Evening to remember
November 26th, 2004
Location: Ikeja, Lagos
From all corners of the metropolis we rendezvoused at the Sheraton for
poolside drinks, small chop, and the tunes of a local band, from 7-10 PM.
On to the Manhattan, a local gin joint, for more drinks and chop. Then to
the main event, Motherlan', at 12:45 am, just in time to catch the last
piece of a Dixieland-style jazz ensemble from ?? music college. In
comfortable plastic chairs we waited under the stars in coolish air for
the sultry saxophone of the famous masked musician. We were not
disappointed. First you hear the sweet notes, then you spot him, weaving
his way through the well-behaved audience. Four hours later he and his
excellent band take a break and you can't believe how fast it got so late.
When the music and the swaying and the bootie shaking stop, you suddenly
feel quite tired. If you can hear pidgin, the comedians who take the stage
next are probably funny. We decide to take a break ourselves and head off
to the Snoxells, for a breakfast that surpasses the imagination. Now, it
is time to race home, past busses crammed with other folks also trying to
beat the 7am curfew of Environmental Day. We all make it, I think.
